Enjoy the summer festival season

Summer is a busy season around Spangdahlem Air Base and the Eifel. Take some time to get familiar with the region and its customs by attending some of the following activities this summer.

The wine town of Traben-Trarbach will host its annual Moselwein festival, offering wine sampling July 9-12.

An open-air rock concert featuring a mix of punk rock and metal takes place July 9-10 for the Rock-am-Bach-Festival in St. Wendel, Saarland.

Enjoy listening to jazz music by The Directors and The Art of Horace Silver 8 p.m. July 8 at the Trier Brunnenhof near the Porta Nigra.

Jazz music by the Christof Thewes Quintet will occur 8 p.m. July 15 at at the Trier Brunnenhof near the Porta Nigra.

The annual Zurlauben Trier Mosel festival takes place July 12 along the river and includes a fireworks display and an amusement park. This is a highlight event in Trier.

Listen to music by the London Brass band 9 p.m. July 17 at the Trier Kurfuerstliches Palais, also known as the Emperial Palace.

The Dresden Salon Damen ladies will perform classics from the '20s, '30s and '40s, wearing traditional costumes from these years. The event takes place at 8 p.m. July 9 at the Luxembourg Burg Befort.

Listen to a horn-blowing instrument concert 8 p.m. July 23 at the Bernkastel-Kues Stiftshof.

Rockville Festival 2010 will feature rock music at 8 p.m., July 30 and 31 at the Kirf festival grounds.

Neumagen-Dhron will sponsor the annual "Mosel Wine Boat" festival July 16-18.

Bitburg's European folk festival, a popular annual event in the local area, features folk dances and entertainment July 10-13. Participating groups from more than 10 different European countries and other continents will perform dances, dressed in their traditional outfits. Highlights feature dancing performances by all groups the evening of July 10 at the Bitburg Bedaplatz festival tent and a folk parade the afternoon of July 11.

Night shopping is available after 11 p.m. in Zell July 17.

The community of Landscheid-Niederkail will sponsor the 60th International Summer Volksmarch of Niederkail July 25. The event, starting and ending at the Kailbach hall features 6k and 10k routes 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and a 20k route 7 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information go to www.dvv-wandern.de or call Juergen Blum at 06575-8640.

Kroev will host a summer sales and flea market July 19.

Antique and flea markets take place July 24-25 in Kroev and Uerzig.

There will be a wine and street festival in Maring-Noviand July 30.

Bread and Games, a Roman spectacle, takes place at the Trier Amphitheater and at the Kaiserthermen Roman bath Aug. 13-15.

People can pig out at the annual Wittlich pig festival Aug. 20-23. This festival is known as a major traditional festival and has gained much popularity.

Schweich will host its annual harbour festival July 30-Aug. 1. This is a small but popular event in the local area.

Lake Stausee in Bitburg-Biersdorf will celebrate a festival including a fireworks display July 31-Aug. 2.

Trier's city museums will stay open late the night of Sept. 11.

The Trier Olewig wine festival features continuous entertainment and a fireworks display July 31-Aug. 3. This is a popular festival in the Trier area.

The world-famous Bad Duerkheim sausage market takes place Sept. 10-14 and 17-20. This festival is more than 560 years old and is known as Germany's biggest folk festival, featuring numerous large festival tents, a carnival, many food stands and plenty of entertainment.

Enjoy a dragon boat festival Aug. 1 in Briedel- located on the Mosel.

The Mosel town of Muehlheim will host a flea market, an art and handicraft market, a farmers' market and a folk festival with a festival parade Aug. 3-8.

Historical celebrations take place at the Manderscheid castles on the Lieser river Aug. 28-29. Activities include puppets, magicians, musical entertainment, classic theater, jousting, horse- riding performances and a traditional handicraft market. Aug. 29 at about 11 p.m. is a giant fireworks display. This is a very popular medieval festival in the local area.

Join Bernkastel in celebrating its traditional wine festival of the middle-Mosel Sept. 2-6. Highlights include a fireworks display the evening of Sept. 5, and a colorful parade at 2 p.m. Sept. 6. This is a major event in the region.

The annual Koblenz Rhine Aflame Festival takes place Aug. 14. The festival attracts more than 50,000 visitors every year and features carnivals, music, other special attractions, and fireworks displays along the Mosel stretching from the Ehrenbreitstein to the Stolzenfels castles.

A flea and antique market takes place in Zeltingen-Rachtig July 3.

The wine town of Longuish, which is located near Schweich, will host a wine street festival Aug. 8.

A street and wine festival takes place in Kinheim Aug. 27-29.

Enjoy the annual street wine festival of Reil Aug. 27.

See an array of balloons take off near the Moselpark Event Resort, located on Bernkastel Plateau, Aug. 6-8 during the annual Bernkastel-Kues Balloon Drivers' meeting.

The 30th Rachtig wine street festival takes place Aug. 27-29 in Zeltingen-Rachtig.

An antique and flea market takes place Sept. 4-5 in Zeltingen-Rachtig.

The Luxembourg Schobermesse, also known as the Luxembourg Octoberfest, is a large fair and attracts visitors from the bordering countries. The event takes place Aug. 20-Sept. 8.

The town of Leiwen will host a wine festival, a public wine probe and a parade Aug. 13-16.

Start making plans and hotel reservations now for Munich's famous Octoberfest, which takes place Sept. 18-Oct. 4 this year.
