Tips to save energy in the kitchen Published Oct. 26, 2007 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Conserve not only money, but also natural resources with the following Green Tips: General awareness - Create an awareness in children for the need of energy conservation. - Be aware of the need for energy conservation at home, the workplace, hotels, etc. Kitchen: - There are numerous energy-demanding appliances in the kitchen that run 24-hours a day seven-days a week. Older appliances consume more energy than newer ones. - Cover pots to save energy when cooking. - When steaming vegetables use a small quantity of liquid to save energy. - Before placing cooked meals in the refrigerator or freezer allow them to completely cool down, which reduces ice formation and saves electricity. - Avoid placing the refrigerator or freezer by the oven, heater or in direct sunlight because these locations cause a greater consumption of electricity to hold the temperature. - Set the refrigerator's temperature at 7 degrees Celsius and the freezer at -18 degrees Celsius. - To test the refrigerator or freezer's seal when it is dark, see if light is visible around the seal.
