Fire department shares turkey fryer safety tips

With Thanksgiving approaching many may be considering how they would like to prepare their turkeys. A longtime food favorite has been the deep-fried turkey. Although this method does prepare a delicious holiday feast, it can present a fire hazard if not used correctly and with caution.

Turkey fryers are hazardous because they can easily tip over, may cause spillover if overfilled with oil or if the turkey is partially frozen when placed in fryer, do not have a thermostat to prevent oil from overheating, and sides of pots, lid and handles become dangerously hot.

To reduce the risk of fire or injury here are some safety tips to use when operating a turkey fryer:
- Always use it outdoors and at a safe distance from buildings and any other ignitable material.
- Never use it on wooden decks or in garages.
- Ensure fryer is placed on flat even surface.
- Never leave fryer unattended.
- Never let children or pets near the fryer when in use or after use; remember, oil inside still remains dangerously hot hours after use.
- Do not overfill fryer.
- Use well insulated potholders or oven mitts when handling fryer components.
- Make sure turkey is completely thawed. Oil and water do not mix and water causes oil to spill over, causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.
- Be careful with marinades. Know what will happen if added to oil.
- Thaw the turkey the refrigerator and allow approximately 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey.
- Keep an all-purpose, ABC, fire extinguisher nearby. Do not use water if fire ensues.

If a fire does occur ensure you know how to contact the fire department.
