Managing your move: DPS makes it easy Published April 4, 2011 SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- In an effort to make moving a little easier, customers can now use the Defense Personal Property System, a full-service tool that provides an improved move process for all eligible members of the Defense Department personal property community. In the system, members can create and submit an application, receive on-line personal property counseling, monitor the progress of shipments, file a claim directly with the transportation service provider and complete a customer satisfaction survey. However, first, people must register for a DPS account. The DPS system can be accessed from any computer with internet access. Permanent-change-of-station orders are not needed to establishing an account; however, orders are required to complete counseling and secure a pick-up date for the move. The first step is to visit the DPS portal website http://www.move.mil. It's strongly suggested members watch the "DoD Service Members and Civilians" video on the home page, as it provides an overview of the process. To register for a DPS account, click the "DPS Registration" tab at the top of the page. Once an account is established, a full spectrum of tools will be accessible, such as the following: The ability to self-counsel and submit applications online, instead of traveling to a transportation office; those who should not self-counsel in DPS at this time are listed on the move.mil website. These customers should visit their local transportation office to coordinate moves. Through the website, users are able to accomplish a number of tasks. - Track shipments through DPS or the interactive voice response any time, any day. - Update contact information at any time. Current contact information is vital to expediting service requests and meeting customer move expectations. - File a claim online, and settle directly with transportation service providers. - Ensure quality, reputable companies handle and ship personal belongings by completing customer satisfaction surveys seven days following the delivery of property. Whether users complete an online application or visit a personal property office for in-person counseling, all eligible customers must establish a DPS user account. Establishing an account prior to visiting a personal property processing office will reduce delays in preparing shipment applications. If self-counseling, it's important to remember to forward copies of orders and a signed application to the appropriate transportation office once the application is submitted. Once a shipment file has been created by the counselor at the transportation office, members can track shipments in DPS, update vital contact information and establish property delivery dates.
