Seminar teaches skills to help bridge generational gap Published March 3, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Tammie Moore 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- The Airman & Family Readiness Center is hosting an Understanding Generational Difference in the Workplace seminar from 3 to 4 p.m. March 16 in the base theater. The seminar conducted by Chuck Underwood, The Generational Imperative founder and president, is designed to help people learn to work more effectively with co-workers from different generations. "For the first time in American history, there are four generations in the workplace Silents, Boomers, Generation Xers and, Millennials," according to the TGI Web site. "Each one has very different attitudes toward their career, bosses, companies, fellow workers and lifestyles. The 'disconnects' between boss and subordinate can be substantial. Managing this amazing mix is becoming increasingly difficult. But when managed properly, the output of such human diversity can be astonishing." The seminar is open to Airmen of all ranks and their civilian counterparts. "We definitely think this will be a helpful workshop for supervisors, but we encourage everyone to attend," said Kari Merski, A&FRC community readiness consultant. "Having knowledge of generational differences can lead to higher productivity and sustained levels of readiness in the workplace." Mr. Underwood will also cover each generation's unique core values and attitudes to help supervisors enhance their ability to retain Airmen, maximize job fulfillment and improve inter-generational cooperation and understanding amongst those from all generations. Attendees can expect to walk away with an understanding of the unique values that drive each generation's unique attitudes toward work, career, bosses and life, Mrs. Merski said.
