Super Saber Day to provide festivities and fun Published June 29, 2009 By Senior Airman Kali L. Gradishar 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- From the Eifel Lanes Bowling Alley parking lot to the base softball fields, numerous activities for all ages will be set up for Sabers and their families to enjoy. Super Saber Day is scheduled July 4 beginning with opening remarks, the posting of the colors and the German and American National Anthems at 3 p.m. Super Saber Day allows the base community to "get together, relax and celebrate the 4th of July with members of the Saber family, as well as many dignitaries and guests from our host nation," said George Price, 52nd Force Support Squadron special events coordinator. Participants are encouraged to "bring huge smiles, a good attitude and high expectations for a good time. They can also bring their pets, but must be prepared to clean up after them," said Mr. Price. "They cannot bring outside alcoholic beverages or a bad attitude, and they should leave their billfolds and purses at home since this is a free base-wide event." And there will be plenty for everyone to participate. "We're going to be offering a lot. The key thing to note is that everything is free ... (except for) beverages inside of the bowling alley and all alcoholic drinks, so people who don't want to spend money don't have to," said Mason Walker, 52nd FSS commercial sponsorship coordinator. "The fitness center staff, led by Mark Geairn (base fitness center director of fitness and sports), will barbecue, and there are pallets of sodas provided." A swiveling mechanical bull, paint ball, pet show and dunk tank are among the activities at the softball field. Children's games include a bouncy castle, relay races, water balloon toss, artificial tattoos and face painting, bubbles and board games. Games and activities will open at 3:30 p.m. and close around 11 - 11:30 p.m. Sabers can bring their furry friends along, too, and enter them in the pet show between the picnic and entertainment pavilions. There are plenty of entertainment venues, as well, to include a disc jockey, The Wild Bobbin Baboons 50's rock band, an Elvis impersonator and The Blind-Dog classic rock band. Sponsors, donors and a number of Airmen and civilians are what make events like this possible, Mr. Walker noted. Exchange New Car Sales, Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club, better known as ADAC, United Service Organizations, Bitburger Brewer and Service Credit Union all contributed to the Super Saber Day providing anything and everything such as food, ball caps, DVDs, soda and prizes for the various activities, he said. Some sponsors will also provide activities, such as the car sales' Jeep Jouster - a softened, gladiator-style competition, and ADAC's motorcycle simulators, children's bicycle safety course and chalk drawing. "A very diverse committee has worked long and hard to make sure we have something for everyone. There will be truck-loads of free food: burgers, hot dogs, chips, sodas and pork rinds," Mr. Price added, emphasizing the word "free." After bellies are full, all of the activities have been experienced and the children are tuckered out , look to the sky at 10:30 p.m. where fireworks will light up the night behind the shoppette.
