Eagle Eyes SFS helps recover stolen items Published July 13, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Logan Tuttle 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- A suspicious individual was identified by the 52nd Security Forces Squadron recently outside of Binsfeld government leased housing after someone reported a man walking from car to car trying to open the doors. Security forces responded and arrived on scene to detain the individual. "We drove in the GLH and cruised up as quietly as we could, and as we took a turn, I noticed a person ducking between cars, obviously trying to dodge us," said Civilian Service Unit Sebastian Berthaut, a of 52nd SFS member who responded to the call. The person claimed he was trying to find a place to relieve himself when CSU Berthaut spoke to him. The person was acting nervous and in addition to trying to hide from them, he kept contradicting his own story, both SFS patrolmen said. "I asked the suspect different questions, trying to figure out what was going on, and the answers just kept on being more and more contradictory and ended up making no sense," CSU Berthaut said. The SFS members detained him and contacted the Polizei. A GPS and iPod were recovered from under a vehicle the suspect was near. It was determined later neither of the items belonged to him. This led to a search warrant being issued and several more stolen items being found in the suspect's residence. "Theft from personally owned vehicles off base is common," said Staff Sgt. Shannon Glenn, another security forces member. "We've had a huge series of larcenies every summer for the last few years," CSU Berthaut added. It's important to lock your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity, both security forces members said. "This story kicked off because one person noticing something unusual," CSU Berthaut said. To report suspicious activity, call the law enforcement desk at 452-6666 or 0656561-6666.
