Air show attracts people to Bitburg from far and near

Bitburg will be the site for an international air show June 26-27, and people will be able to observe popular civilian and military planes to include small sports planes, "old-timer" jets, gliders and parachute jumpers.

The third annual Luxembourg International Air Show will feature a static display as well as acrobatic flying demonstrations. More than 10 acrobatic flying squadrons are scheduled to perform. Visit www.airshow.lu for a detailed listing of all participating aircraft.

The F-86 Sabre, which was once stationed with the 36th Fighter Wing from 1953-1959 at Bitburg Air Base, has been announced to be among this year's air show highlights.
Visitors will have the opportunity to admire aircraft from across Europe and North America.

All activities take place on the airfield and around the tower of the former Bitburg Flugplatz.

This year's air show begins Saturday, when numerous European jets will conduct a fly-in performance. Operating hours are noon-6 p.m. June 26 and 10 a.m-6 p.m. June 27. The majority of flying demonstrations are scheduled to take place 2-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m-6 p.m. Sunday.

According to organizers, the event has grown to become one of Germany's most popular and largest air shows with thousands of visitors from Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium.

The event has been designed to please small and tall, and it promises to be interesting to both military members and the civilian populace.

For a fee, visitors can take a ride in helicopters or historical aircraft and see Bitburg and the beautiful Eifel from a bird's eye view.

For those who would rather stay on the ground and enjoy the entertainment, a cart and quad track will be set up.

A variety of snacks, food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the air show.

Entrance fees are 12 euros June 26 and 15 euros June 27. These costs include fee parking and program schedules.

A Park & Ride service will be set up on both days providing transportation to and from the event area.
