Great American Smokeout
The American Cancer Society marks the 35th Great American Smokeout Nov. 18th by encouraging smokers to make a plan to quit or to quit on this day. The event started at a 1971 event in Randolph, Massachusetts, when Arthur P. Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund. The idea caught on and the first national Great American Smokeout was in 1977. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Matthew B. Fredericks)
