The Tier II organization will host a Saber Endurance Challenge June 3 to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany.

The challenge is designed to test both physical and mental fitness, strength, stamina and determination for teams competing in the event.

"This event is a great for people to come together and enjoy some friendly competition," said Tech. Sgt. Christina Johnson, 52nd Medical Operations Squadron, who had the idea for the challenge. "Not only does it build morale, but it also supports a good cause."

Fifty-one percent of the money raised will be contributed to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The project is a nonprofit organization that enables wounded U.S. soldiers the opportunity and resources to rehabilitate and live active and healthy lives, according to the Wounded Warrior Project Web site.

The course, which begins 12 p.m. at the visitor center parking lot, is a 6.2-mile mud run over uneven terrain with hills and obstacles that require teamwork to finish.

"People along the route will see how your team spirit is, and points are awarded based on that camaraderie," Sergeant Johnson said.

"There is also a point system that bases the winning team on how accurately they can guess their time," she said. "Since points are based on your estimated time, watches or anything that keeps track of time can't be worn."

A maximum of 10 points can be given to each team for time accuracy within five minutes of their estimated time. The team loses a point for every five minutes they're over their estimated time.

"Everyone has different physical aptitudes," Sergeant Johnson said. "This way the challenge is more balanced and everyone can compete for the winning spot."

Each team must have at least two but no more than five team members. There must also be a member of the opposite sex on the team. More points are awarded for the teams that have most people.

"There is also a team T-shirt design contest where the shirts will be judged by the T-shirt's creativity," she said. "[Air Force] physical training gear is not allowed for the event, so team shirts factor into the overall score."

To participate, teams should pay the $100 registration fee to Sergeant Johnson no later than June 2. For more information, call DSN (314)452-8321.
