Name: Staff Sgt. Edgar Almengor

Unit: 52nd Medical Support Squadron

Duty title: NCO in charge, medical service account

Hometown: San Antonio

Years in Service: 8 years

Why joined: Coming from a military family, I made an agreement with my father during my senior year in high school that if I did not enroll in college immediately after graduation, I would join the Air Force for at least 4 years.

Family: My wife of two years, Crystal, who also works in the 52nd Medical Group as a secretary for the 52nd Aerospace Medicine Squadron commander.

Hobbies: I enjoy sports, working on cars, paintball, snowboarding and traveling with my wife.

Favorite aspect of job: It's the instant gratification. Any time one of our customers or patients has an issue or a question, I have the opportunity to make that person's day easier by solving their issue or giving them the information needed to solve it themselves. I'm able to see how my job impacts people's lives on a daily basis.

Most memorable Air Force experience: During one of my two deployments to Southwest Asia, I had the pleasure of getting to know a young Army private who was flown in with a battle injury. His aeromedical evacuation flight out of Iraq was delayed, so he had to spend his one-year wedding anniversary in the hot and cramped Contingency Air Staging Facility tent. I made some phone calls and was able to get a satellite phone for him to use to call his wife on their first anniversary. Two months later, I received a letter in the mail from him and his wife thanking me for making that phone call happen.

How do you make responsible choices: I always think about my future goals and how one bad choice can affect those goals. But above all, I think about my family. I know that if I don't make responsible choices, I will not only let my fellow Airman down, but also my family.
