The 2014 Presidents Day Trivia Challenge with Answers

1.) Which two presidents appeared on FIVE presidential election tickets as both presidential and vice-presidential candidates? In fact, both presidents served on four winning tickets and lost one.

Answer: Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Richard Nixon.

FDR won the presidential elections of 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. He ran for vice president with Ohio Governor James Cox on the losing Democratic ticket in 1920. Nixon was elected vice president twice on Dwight Eisenhower's tickets in 1952 and 1956. Nixon ran for president in 1960 but lost to John F. Kennedy. However, he was elected president in 1968 and re-elected in 1972.

2.) Which COUNTY is the birthplace of three U.S. presidents who all served in different centuries?

Answer: Norfolk County, Mass.

This county houses the birthplaces of John Adams, John Quincy Adams and John F. Kennedy. All three served as president in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, respectively.

3.) Which two presidents have both earned a Nobel Peace Prize, a Grammy award AND been named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year?

Answer: Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.

They each won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Albums (Carter in 2007 for 'Our Endangered Values' and Obama in 2006 for 'Dreams from my Father' and in 2008 for 'The Audacity of Hope.') They both received Nobel Peace Prizes (Carter in 2002 and Obama in 2009.) And both were named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year (Carter in 1976 and Obama in 2008 and 2012.)

4.) Which president was the only one NOT to be elected president or vice-president?

ANSWER: Gerald Ford.

After being sworn in for a second term in 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew later resigned for charges of tax evasion while he was governor of Maryland. He was replaced by Ford, the then-minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Nixon resigned from the office of the presidency in August 1974 due to the Watergate scandal. Ford's ascension to the presidency makes him the only person to become president without being directly elected by the people. He ran for president in his own right in 1976 but lost to Jimmy Carter.

5.) Who was the first president born in the "United States?"

ANSWER: Martin Van Buren.

While the first seven presidents were born within the territory known as the American colonies, they were British subjects. The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4th, 1776, thus establishing the United States of America. Van Buren was born in 1782 and was elected president in 1836.
