Bonfires: Say goodbye to winter
PREIST, Germany - A young man from the community of Preist, a community located outside of Spangdahlem, lights a bonfire. In the Eifel region the first Sunday of Lent is called “Huettensonntag,” Following an ancient tradition townspeople believe that by lighting huge bonfires they can chase away winter spirits. Using straw and brushwood, the young people of the village built a so called “hut” that set on fire in the evening. (U.S. Air Force Photo/Iris Reiff)
