Bernkastel festival honors wine heritage with parties, parades, pyrotechnics

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Among the highlights of the Bernkastel festival is a folk parade at 2 p.m. Sept. 4 this year, featuring about 100 floats and bands parading through the city. Most of the wine communities, located along the Mosel River, will participate in the parade with their own theme. Almost every community has a wine queen, who is expected to represent the community at official events. The Bernkastel middle Mosel festival officially starts at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 2 with the opening of the amusement park and market along the Mosel River shore in Kues. Tens of thousands of visitors, to include many base members, come to the festival annually, sampling Mosel wines and enjoying the festivities. The festival ends around midnight Sept. 5.
