Middle school students dig for history

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – Kaenani Fernandez, daughter of Staff Sgt. Lelani Puga, 52nd Medical Operations Squadron, searches for biological remains in a soil sample from a dinosaur excavation site during class here Oct. 12. Scientists from the Paleontologist Research Institute donated the 10,000-year-old soil from a mastodon excavation site in Hyde Park, N.Y., to the Bitburg Middle School. The lab experiment gave the students important insight into what processes scientists use to search for remains at excavation sites. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Dillon Davis)
