Manderscheid Castles: Where past meets present at annual castle festival

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Two visitors admire the Manderscheid Niederburg, or lower castle, Aug. 21. Manderscheid’s two castle ruins can be visited daily throughout the year. The Oberburg, upper castle, dates from the year 973, and the Niederburg was first mentioned in 1173. The Niederburg castle is open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. with shorter hours from November to March. The entry is 2 Euros for adults and 1 Euro for children older than 6. Children younger than 6 get in for free. Manderscheid is located north of the Moselle River, directly north of Autobahn A-48. To get there, take a right outside the main gate and follow the signs. The annual historical castle festival takes place Aug. 25-26 this year with many events scheduled. (U.S. Air Force photo by Iris Reiff/Released)
