New Speed Signs Honor 52nd Fighter Wing

The 52nd Fighter Wing installed new speed limit signs to promote solidarity and cohesion across the base Jan 8, 2025. This symbolic change, an increase from 50 km/h to 52 km/h, underscores the community’s deep connection with the 52nd Fighter Wing and its remarkable legacy.

Col Kevin Crofton, 52nd Fighter Wing Commander, spearheaded the initiative as a creative and meaningful homage to the contributions of the wing.

“This adjustment is more than just a change in numbers—it’s a tribute to a storied history and a way to visually integrate our pride for the 52nd Fighter Wing into daily life,” said Col Crofton.

The mission of the 52nd Fighter Wing is to deliver Airpower to deter and combat aggression. The wing’s history at Spangdahlem dates back to 1971, when it was activated as the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing. The 52 TFW earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor for its accomplishments during the Persian Gulf conflict with Iraq. The wing reorganized into the 52nd Fighter Wing in October 1991.

“By aligning our speed limit with the number ‘52,’ we remind drivers and residents of the vital role this unit plays in safeguarding our freedom and fostering community ties,” said Crofton.

The 52nd Fighter Wing exists today as a key asset in the security of US and NATO interests in the region and continues to deploy in support of both contingency operations in Southeast Asia as well as numerous Theater Security Packages throughout Europe.

While the wing initially updated a handful of speed limit signs, it plans to update the rest over the coming months.
