Fall is steadily approaching. The leaves are turning amazing shades of red, orange and yellow. The smells of freshly chopped wood, bonfires, fire places and baked apple and pumpkin pies linger in the brisk, cool air.

Soon enough these smells will change to scents of cocoa, pine, peppermint and fresh bread and sounds of jingle bells and caroling will fill the air. However, with all the wonders winter brings, the season also brings dangerous road and weather conditions.

Last year, the 52nd Fighter Wing Safety office here kicked off a Operation Winterize, and the event was such a success that safety is doing it again this year. Operation Wintererize brings winter safety to Saber Nation in a fun and energetic way. This year’s event is scheduled for Oct. 17 in front of the Base Exchange. During the event, multiple agencies will present ways to say safe during the winter season including winter vehicle safety tips. Although many people know that cars here must don winter tires from Nov. 15 until March 1, many people also forget to check out the rest of their vehicles for winter readiness.

Because of this known issue, the safety office has teamed up with the 52nd Logistics Readiness Squadron maintenance flight here, Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-club and AAFES to provide free winterize vehicle inspections during the Operation Winterize event. In addition to inspections, different base agencies will set-up booths to advertise various avenues on staying safe during the winter. Those wanting to learn what to look for on their own vehicles also will be able to attend a basic car care class.

Young children will be able to enjoy fun activities to include bounce houses, games and even a smoke trailer.

For any Airmen unable to attend the Oct. 17 event, the wing safety office will also be offering free vehicle inspections, Oct. 15, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Spangdahlem Shoppette Car Care Center.
