Airmen to register to save lives Published Aug. 7, 2013 By Staff Reports 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Airmen and their family members will have the opportunity to register with a bone marrow registry at the Skelton Memorial Fitness Center Aug. 8. The C.W. Bill Young Marrow Donor Program is a Department of Defense-specific registry meant to assist adults and children diagnosed with leukemia, aplastic anemia, and other blood diseases. Interested donors can sign up for this lifesaving cause at the gym 7:30 - 9 a.m., 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and 3 - 5 p.m., said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Bridgette Brzezinski, who is heading up the registry on base. Donors just need to sign a release form and they are given an oral swab to determine tissue type. From there, the results are added to the National Marrow Donor Registry, an international database with willing donors. "It's really a great opportunity to potentially save someone's life, and the more people who are registered, the more likely that person will find a match," said Brzezinski.
