Curfew Guidance Instructions Published Aug. 20, 2013 By Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Pomeroy 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Current instruction on Spangdahlem AB for curfew's and child supervision have been a hot topic lately. This is likely due to the fact that with summer brings increased chances for activities for children. With increased activity, sometimes late nights or drop-off and pick-up times are later than normal for parents. To find the current policy for the base, parents can access Spangdahlem Air Base Instruction 31-103, Base Curfew and Supervision Guidelines. There has been an increase in calls inquiring about rules and regulations regarding children staying at home for an extended period unsupervised or how late curfew would be for teenagers. "Parents should be familiar with the guidance in SABI 31-103, and when in doubt, always err on the side of caution when it comes to the safety and security of children and pets," said Capt. Dustin Williams, 52nd Security Forces Squadron operations officer. Parents need to be cognizant of curfew restrictions for their dependents. Children under 18, who are not with a parent or sponsor, should not loiter in the streets, highways, roads, alleys, playgrounds or other public areas. While there hasn't been an increase in curfew breaks or children being left unattended, there has been an upward trend of parents asking about the rules. "Cases are extremely rare on Spangdahlem and Bitburg. Most of the time we are only dealing with inquires into the policy," Williams added. According to the instruction, curfew for children 12 years and younger is 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the summer months. For children ages 13 through 17, curfew is 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. As the 2013-14 school year approaches, parents can plan on shortening curfew hours slightly. Curfew during the school year for children as 12 and younger is 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; and 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for children 13 through 17. The current policy is under review and scheduled for a revision. However, until then, all rules and guidelines for the base regarding supervision and curfew can be found in SABI 31-103.
