The 52nd Fighter Wing hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a new commissary Feb. 21.

The 52,500-square-foot commissary will feature wider aisles, modern décor, a larger selection of items and more checkout counters.

"In a time of fiscal constraints, we can and should fund only mission-essential military construction projects," said Col. David Julazadeh, 52nd FW commander. "I can assure you this one is necessary, and it will be a fantastic quality of life improvement for Saber Nation."

Engineers designed the state-of-the-art facility as an improvement upon the current store and will be located near the Base Exchange and fitness center for customer convenience.

"We are all proud members of a larger team helping to modernize the Spangdahlem community," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Rick Rieger, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Air Force program manager. "We are committed to delivering world-class facilities to the dedicated Airmen, civilians and families who live here."

The scheduled completion date of the $25 million facility is February 2016.
