Preparations are in full swing for the famous Wittlich Pig Burner's festival to take place Aug. 14-17, 2015 in Wittlich, Germany.

Activities will take place four days straight in areas to include the Markplatz or main market square, the pedestrian zone or on Schlossplatz. The city will turn into one large party mile for visitors to enjoy.

This unique festival with ancient tradition and a legend is an event that people talk about weeks out in anticipation for its arrival. According to city organizers, the festival not only attracts local residents from the larger Wittlich area, but also visitors and tourists from all over the country, from Belgium and Luxemburg and even from the United States.

Those people who trust legends may understand why Wittlich is so famous for its pigs, and why residents roast pigs to this date in memory of an event that took place centuries ago.

Legend has it that a gate guard, who was charged with securing the gate to the walled fortress city, couldn't find the peg to the door one evening. Instead, he used a carrot. Unfortunately a pig arrived and ate the carrot, causing the door to open, allowing the enemy to come in. As a result, the angry citizens herded every pig into a fire in the market square and roasted them.

FESTIVAL PLAY

The festival always starts off with a play, featuring this legend. Although the play is in German and goes on for quite a long time, it may be an experience for base members to see the introduction and take photos of the actors -- some of them dressed in pig costumes and ancient costumes.

This year's play is scheduled for 9:30 p.m., Aug. 14, at the Wittlich Stadtpark or city park. Beware that prior to the play, a local gun club will fire off some loud salute shots at about 9:15 p.m.
