Tax season is quickly approaching and assignments overseas do not serve as exemptions from filing tax returns. Do not worry - the Spangdahlem Tax Center is here to help. The Spangdahlem Tax Center will open Feb. 1 and close on June 15. Feb. 1 -11 is reserved for those filing the 1040EZ form.

The Tax Center is located in Spangdahlem's Legal Office, Bldg. 125. This year's program, which utilizes Internal Revenue Service certified volunteer income tax assistants, will guide customers through the tax season. The Tax Center uses software from the website www.militaryonesource.com. Customers will input their own tax data, and a volunteer will be available to answer questions. For more complex tax returns, you may schedule an appointment with a volunteer and use the Taxwise Online preparation software.

Preparation tips before you file:

1. Start gathering the necessary documents and information to file your taxes:

· Social security numbers for you, your spouse and children
· All W-2s
· Any 1099 forms you have received
· Any 1098 forms you have received
· Any K-1 schedules (income from an estate or trust)
· Records of any income from gambling, awards, prizes or jury duty
· Records of any alimony received or paid
· Records of any rent or royalty property income
· Records of educational expenses
· IRA contribution information
· Dependent child-care expenses (including name, address and EIN/SSN of provider)
· Your bank account number and routing number for direct deposit
· A copy of last year's federal and state returns.

It is important to remember to bring any applicable documents listed above when coming to the Spangdahlem Tax Center for tax assistance. In addition, fill out the intake/interview sheet before starting the filing process. This form can be found at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f13614c.pdf or the Tax Center.

2. If a spouse does not have a social security number, they will need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

It is still possible to file joint returns if spouses have ITINs. Spouses can apply for an ITIN by filing a W-7 form, available with instructions on the Internal Revenue Service Web site at http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html.
