Major protests, violence expected in Frankfurt, Germany, May 16-19 Published May 15, 2012 By Staff Reports U.S. Air Forces in Europe Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- According to local law enforcement officials, approximately 20,000 - 40,000 participants are expected to participate in a series of major protests near the European Central Bank on Kaiserstrasse 29, Frankfurt from May 16 through 19. U.S. Air Forces in Europe members are encouraged to avoid the demonstrations and should plan alternate routes - traffic in these areas will likely be severely affected during the demonstrations. See a more detailed schedule of the planned demonstrations below: - May 16 protestor intentions are yet not known. - May 17 demonstrators plan to occupy central squares in Frankfurt. - May 18 protestors plan to attempt to block the entrances to branches of the European Central Bank and other large firms in downtown Frankfurt. - May 19 demonstrators plan on a major rally in downtown Frankfurt to include all public squares and areas. Tips to remember: -Avoid large gatherings or demonstrations. If you come upon a demonstration, remain calm and disengage from the situation. Avoid speaking loudly. -Be aware of your surroundings. -Stay away from high risk areas. -Monitor the news for updated information. -Travel in small groups (never alone) and vary movements. -Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. -Try to be inconspicuous. Do not draw attention to yourself. -If there is an incident at your destination or any location on your itinerary inform your unit of your status as soon as possible. -Carry a cell phone if possible and have emergency numbers handy (pre-programmed in phone)
