Saber Nation welcomed a senior leader from the American Red Cross during an installation visit Feb. 25.

Sherri Brown, senior vice president of the Red Cross' Service to the Armed Forces, toured part of the base and met with volunteers as part of a European visit to meet with workers in Europe.

"I think it is important to get out and see the work of both the people we support and the work of our Red Crossers," Brown said. "It's good to come out and understand the military mission, understand the communities we work in, and to watch our Red Crossers in action."

The mission of the Red Cross' Service to the Armed Forces is to provide humanitarian support to service members, veterans and their families around the clock and around the globe under a trusted symbol.

During the visit, Brown met with leaders to discuss what her organization does on Spangdahlem, and how they can improve their partnership with the military.

"It's important because a lot of decisions are made in head office that we abide by," said Breeanna Alex, a field office assistant for Spangdahlem's Red Cross office, about the importance of Brown's visit. "It's great when they get to see what it's like actually serving the armed forces, what the needs are, the issues, both good and bad, and the things we could do better."

The visit ended with a lunch at the Red Cross facility with a group of volunteers. Brown concluded the lunch by thanking the volunteers for what they do.
