SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- More than 300 German and American revelers donned costumes, dined on German cuisine and sang along to celebratory tunes during the inaugural Saber Kappensitzung at Club Eifel Feb. 28.

Kappensitzung is a traditional German celebration during Fasching, a German holiday timed for the end of the spring season, with an evening of special guests from the local community, comedy, music and dancing.

More than a dozen troupes from the Eifel region performed dance routines and musical re-enactments of movies throughout the night.

At the request of the mayor of Bitburg, a delegation of Saber Airmen helped defend the city Feb. 27 during the storming of the city hall tradition. Female residents presented Mayor Joachim Kandels with their demands before seizing the "key to the city," symbolizing that they had taken charge, per the Fasching tradition.
