The U.S. Air Force Chief of Safety visited Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Jan. 23, 2015, to get an in-depth view into the base's safety operations.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Kurt Neubauer, Air Force Chief of Safety, met and spoke with Airmen from safety's four functional areas: ground, weapons, flight and human performance. Each area presented its capabilities and logistics for safety performance.

"It's always phenomenal to have someone of his stature and rank come down to the wing level," said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Richard Page, 52nd Fighter Wing ground safety superintendent. "It creates an open-door policy where we can express our challenges and concerns directly. The benefits of having him here is that he personally sees how safety is embedded into the 52nd FW mission accomplishments and how we're leaning forward in the right direction."

Neubauer spoke about the importance of personally coming to Spangdahlem to get a better understanding of the mission.

"It's my first time at Spangdahlem," Neubauer said. "I wanted to get a sense of the concerns that leaders at all levels have to deal with here. Although I could get all that information through a briefing, it is always better to get it from a first-hand source. By seeing the surroundings and the geography, I can get a better understanding of the issues that need to be dealt with."

Neubauer also brought a message with him to Spangdahlem that he wants all Airmen to remember."We make risk and reward decisions every day," Neubauer said. "As Airmen, we need to ensure that we mitigate the risks that we take. Part of being safe is having the awareness of not only what we're doing, but also having a healthier respect for the risks that we take as a matter of practice."
