7/2/2012 - SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany  -- The 52nd Fighter Wing held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the child development center here June 29.

The 52nd FW leadership along with community leaders joined CDC workers and children to celebrate the first day of construction for the new facility, which has an estimated completion date of May 2014.

"As leaders in the Air Force and in our Germany community, we talk about three things: mission, Airmen and family," said Brig. Gen. Chris Weggeman, 52nd FW commander. "Today, we're going to break ground on a facility that starts on the foundation of that, which is family. We're going to take care of our families.

"Why do we do that?" he asked. "Because when you take care of the family, you take care of the Airmen. And, when Airmen are taken care of, they take care of the mission and they do it so well every day."

Upon completion, the new $12.7 million center will replace the two CDC buildings here and one that closed at Bitburg Annex. One of the current CDC buildings, Bldg. 457, will remain open to provide care for infants and toddlers. The new facility can support nearly 170 children ages 1 -5 in one location, and it will include 11 classrooms, a lobby, administration, training and kitchen areas.

"It's going to be beautiful, new and provide more care to children," said Maj. Cat Logan, 52nd Force Support Squadron commander. "It's going to benefit Airmen and families in many ways, not only because it's a new building, but it's going to help by decreasing our wait list since we're going to have more classrooms to provide care to children."

Current care will remain the same during construction. For more information, call DSN 452-6697 or 06565-6697.

The contract for construction of the CDC building was awarded to Peter Gross construction May 2012.
