4/12/2012 - SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Explore castles, visit historic towns and enjoy adventure sports by signing up for tours and trips from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 11 during the Explore the Eifel fair at Club Eifel.

Explore the Eifel provides people a chance to go on low-cost excursions to see and learn about local culture, history and daily life in the Eifel and Mosel regions.

More than 100 exhibitors will be at the fair with regional travel information. Tourist agencies, clubs, associations, mayors, and community volunteers will offer events such as wine tastings, hikes, volksmarches, and other sporting events, picnics, pony rides, park visits, shopping sprees, wellness offers, and more.

The fair will also feature local music and multi-media presentations, and people can get their photo taken with a Mosel wine queen, stand face-to-face with a Roman soldier, or stand in a hot air balloon.

Vendors from Luxembourg will offer information about various World War II museums.
People can experience the Eifel at the fair by tasting local food, playing games, participating in competitions, and viewing entertainment. They can also sign up for tours and trips to explore the Eifel off base.

"At the fair, besides finding information on tour packages and brochures in English, visitors will be able to experience the Eifel with games, raffles, competitions, sports and other attractions planned for both children and adults of all ages," said Bernhard Schaefer, 52nd Fighter Wing community relations advisor. "People will also be able to taste local food specialties and get their photo taken with special guests. For the first time, many door prizes will be given away, and visitors will be able to win trips, souvenirs, and local attraction entry tickets."

Every 20th visitor will be asked three questions relating to the Eifel region, and if he or she answers at least two correctly, he or she will receive a gift at the fair, he added.

A good way to find the answers and learn more about the Eifel is to visit the official Spangdahlem AB website and read the Saber E-Herald.

"We hope to see many people experiencing the Eifel at this year's fair. There will be a lot of surprises," Schaefer said.

The trips people sign up for during the fair May 11 will take place May 19-20.
