Americans have been celebrating America Recycles Day since Nov. 15, 1997. This special day encourages us to recycle and buy recycled products.

The 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron Environmental office uses this day as an opportunity to inform science class students at Spangdahlem Middle School and Bitburg Middle-High School about the importance of recycling and waste management.

Beyond education, the Spangdahlem America Recycles Day campaign includes hands-on efforts to encourage recycling by distributing reusable shopping bags. This promotion was initiated here in 2012 by the 52nd CES to reduce the environmental impact from and the use of plastic shopping bags. These bags were distributed during environmental events such as Earth Day, America Recycles Day, the Newcomers Briefing and other occasions. For America Recycles Day 2015, the campaign continues.

In 2014, the European Union will implement a law that reduces the use of plastic bags. Spangdahlem wants to support the European efforts to keep our environment greener.

Airmen from the 52nd CES, with support from the 52nd Security Force Squadron, will distribute the reusable bags for free Nov. 12-14, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exchange and Nov. 17-19, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Commissary. So come on out and get your reusable bag.

Take care of our future. Go green and join our reusable bag campaign!
