If you arrive Saturday by 2:30 p.m. you will be able to catch all of the festivities, including the catching of the pigs and a parade through the village. At 3 p.m. the Fest will be declared officially open by way of a "flower greeting" to St. Rochus. The delivery of this greeting takes place in the main square. There is a large child friendly carnival during the day, however, the streets are crowded during the evenings. Manderscheid Jousting Festival occurs Aug. 25 - 26. This medieval celebration including a jousting tournament, a craft market and a fireworks display. Admission varies from 4 to 7 Euro, children under 11 are free. "Weinfest der Mittelmosel" in Bernkastel-Kues happens Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. If you go to only one Weinfest this season, make this the one. The fireworks display/battle is probably one of the best you will ever see. The fireworks are Saturday evening only. Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim takes place Sept. 7 - 11 and Sept. 14 - 20. This is the world's largest wine fest. This fest is a huge carnival, during the day it is children friendly. Wine is served strictly in very large glasses. Oktoberfest occurs Sept. 22 - Oct. 7. The Mayor of München kicks off Otoberfest Sept. 22 at noon by tapping the first keg of beer. Only after he has tapped the barrel are visitors allowed to start drinking. This is the most famous and largest folk and beer festival in the world. If you want to go, start making your travel arrangements now as the fest draws more than 100,000 visitors each day.
