The U.S. Postal Service announced proposed price changes, including an increase in the price of a first-class mail single-piece letter from 46 cents to 49 cents as of Jan. 26, 2014.

Customers will see an overall increase in price of 2.4 percent.

"The biggest change would be 46-cent stamp. The stamp has changed from 46 to 49 cents," said Staff Sgt. Vernon Howard, 52nd Communications Squadron NCO in charge of the finance section, Nashville Tenn. "The reason why it is so big is because it is much more widely used compared to the 33-cent stamp."

The price increases are intended to generate $2 billion in incremental annual revenue for the Postal Service.

Highlights of the new single-piece First-Class Mail pricing include:

· Letters (1 oz.) -- three-cent increase to 49 cents
· Letters additional ounces -- one-cent increase to 21 cents
· Letters to all international destinations (1 oz.) -- $1.15
· Postcards -- one-cent increase to 34 cents

This price increase happens in some capacity every year, although this year prices have risen more than in the past.
