Airmen commenced awareness of National African American History Month at The Exchange on Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Feb. 2, 2016.

February has been proclaimed NAAHM by U.S. President Barack Obama to remember the efforts and accomplishments of African Americans in the Unites States' history.

"As we mark the 40th year of National African American History Month, let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by generations of African Americans, and let us resolve to continue our march toward a day when every person knows the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," said U.S. President Barack Obama in his February 2016 presidential proclamation.

The importance of observing African American history should be evident to all Americans everywhere said, U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Casey Morris, NAAHM event coordinator.

"The history of African Americans is a story that needs to be told every year," Morris said. "One cannot truly know what it means to be an American without knowing about those who helped to make America what it is today."

Throughout the month, agencies across Spangdahlem will offer a variety of events in observance of NAAHM with this year's theme being 'Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories.'

"Each event capitalizes on the importance of unity and diversity in an ever-changing world," Morris said. "From desegregated classrooms to a unified armed services, each culture has the potential to positively enhance quality-of-life and equal opportunity for all."
