Members of the 52nd Fighter Wing gathered April 16-18 to hear the words of the base commander as he discussed the wing's priorities and the road ahead.

"During this busy time it is important for us to not become distracted from our priorities of preparing to fight, fighting to win and taking care of one another," said Col. Darryl Roberson, 52nd FW commander. "Maintaining a focus on these priorities will lead us successfully through the upcoming Phase II, NATO Operations Evaluation and AEF rotation."

The upcoming exercises in May will serve as a carbon copy of the June OPEVAL, followed by three days of Demonstration Days for NATO.

"The Demonstration Days will allow us to show our warfighting skills for the NATO evaluators," Colonel Roberson said. "This opportunity allows us to showcase some of our capabilities before the OPEVAL, and the items demonstrated during this time will not be accomplished during the OPEVAL."

In June, about 150 multi-national evaluators will arrive at Spangdahlem to certify Sabers' NATO commitments.

"The keys to a successful OPEVAL begin with understanding the SHAPE Tactical Evaluation Manual, or STEM," Colonel Roberson said. "Everyone needs to know how we are going to be graded in their related area. If you don't know ask."

While there are many long hours facing Sabers in preparation for these events, there are also many upcoming events that will shape the future of the wing. In July, the 52nd Medical Group hospital is transitioning to a clinic.

In addition, during March the wing assumed command of two new units, the 38th Munitions Maintenance Group, which will be designated as the 52nd Munitions Maintenance Group in June and the 470th Air Base Squadron located in Geilenkirchen.

The assimilation of these units has added more than 700 military members and 800 dependants to the wing.

"Despite all of the upcoming challenges and transitions occurring in our wing, there will be time for relaxation this summer," Colonel Roberson said. "Explore the Eifel is around the corner when we will give some passes to provide our Airmen the opportunity to enjoy the area and unwind."
