480th Fighter Squadron activation ceremony
SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany--The 480th Fighter Squadron patch is visible on the arm of an F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot during the 480th’s activation ceremony Aug. 13. During the ceremony all 22nd Fighter Squadron “Stingers” removed their patches and replaced them with new Warhawk patch. The 480th is Spangdahlem’s newest F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron, and took on the motto “From Escardrille to Warhawks” to signify its geographical ties to the Lafayette Escadrille in France. Prior to America’s entry into World War I, 38 American pilots volunteered to fly for the French Aéronautique militaire in April 1916 and are known as America’s first fighter aircraft aviators.
