Middle school students dig for history

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – Erica Hylen, left, daughter of Tech. Sgt. Eric Hylen, 52nd Logistics Readiness Squadron, and Tom Oliver, Bitburg Middle School science teacher, look at samples of plant fibers from a dinosaur excavation site during class here Oct. 12. Scientists from the Paleontologist Research Institute donated the 10,000-year-old soil from a mastodon excavation site in Hyde Park, N.Y., to the Bitburg Middle School. The lab experiment gave the students important insight into what processes scientists use to search for remains at excavation sites. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Dillon Davis)
