Ghost Army documentary to air here Published March 6, 2014 By Senior Airman Alexis Siekert 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Spangdahlem community members will have the opportunity to watch a free screening of an exclusive airing of "The Ghost Army" next week at the base theater. This event honors the United States Armed Forces' proud heritage of a World War II unit. The Ghost Army was a secret Army unit whose members served with a unique mission, according to the documentary's official website. The weapons they employed were unusual: hundreds of inflatable tanks and sound-effect records. They bluffed, deceived, and tricked to save lives. They painted and sketched their way across Europe, creating a unique visual record of their journey. The documentary was aired on the Public Broadcasting Service last year and has since been broadcasted in 11 other countries. It will be shown on television in Germany later this year. "I continue to do screenings all around the U.S., usually in conjunction with museums, colleges, military bases and other organizations," said Rick Beyer, the documentary's director. "The idea for this screening (at Spangdahlem) came out of the European Theatrical premiere of the film last November in Luxembourg. I was excited that Col. Julazadeh and some of the leadership team from the 52nd Fighter Wing attended the screening. When we talked afterward, it was clear they were eager to bring the film to Spangdahlem." The screenings will be free and open to the base populous March 11 from 10-11:15 a.m. and 1-2:15 p.m., and March 13 from 4-5:15 p.m. "I'm happy that we were able to make this happen," Beyer said. "I am thrilled and honored that we have been able to do a number of free screenings at military bases and Veterans' Affairs hospitals, and hope to do more in the future."
