A staff sergeant assigned to the 52nd Equipment Maintenance Squadron died May 24 in a traffic accident near Daun, Germany, approximately 40 kilometers from Spangdahlem Air Base.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Klose, 24, was stationed at Spangdahlem since December 2011. He was posthumously awarded the rank of staff sergeant May 24.

"Mike was a tremendous Airman -- a maintainer's maintainer who could fix anything," said U.S. Air Force Maj. Bryan Wong, 52nd EMS commander. "He had a contagious smile that brightened everyone's mood and had an outgoing personality that drew people to him. He had a positive impact not only to the squadron, but to everyone he met. He will be sorely missed."

A memorial service honoring Klose will be held at Hangar 1 at 10 a.m. May 28.

UPDATE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the memorial service will be at the Spangdahlem Air Base chapel.
