U.S. Air Force Col. Joe McFall, 52nd Fighter Wing commander, declared Oct. 4-10 as Fire Prevention Week during a proclamation signing at Fire House 1 on Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Oct. 2, 2015.

"I urge each and every one of you to protect your homes and families by heeding the important safety messages of this national campaign," McFall said. "Please support the many public safety activities and efforts of our Fire and Emergency Services flight."

Every year, Spangdahlem observes Fire Prevention Week with this year's theme being, 'Hear the beep where you sleep, every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.'

According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. The risk of dying is cut in half in homes with functioning smoke alarms.

To spread awareness during Fire Prevention Week, fire fighters and safety representatives will visit Bitburg Elementary School Oct. 6-8 to conduct fire safety demonstrations for the students.

Events for all include a vehicle extrication demonstration Monday, Oct. 5, and a "training day" Friday, Oct. 9, both from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exchange.
