Spangdahlem is observing Red Cross Month with numerous events in March including a blood drive, cook off, 5K run and two dodge ball tournaments.

The American Red Cross's objective for all of the events is to raise awareness about all of the programs and services they provide here, at home and downrange.

"This month, let us be guided by the truth that we all share a similar destiny, and let us support organizations that work to lift up the lives of our planet's most vulnerable people," said President Barack Obama in his March 2016 proclamation. "Together, we can give everyone a place to turn in times of crisis and uncertainty."

According to the ARC website, the Red Cross responds to a community disaster every eight minutes, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. Its volunteers also train millions of people in first aid, water safety and other lifesaving skills.

"The American Red Cross takes great pride in being able to bring valuable resources to the nation, and we could only do it with the power and strength of our everyday heroes, the volunteers," said Ola Kimble, Spangdahlem ARC field office assistant. "These volunteers reach out to people in need and during the month of March we want to highlight the work they do and the results."

While highlighting their volunteers this month, the ARC will also be offering events to the Spangdahlem community in support of Red Cross Month. One event is the Super Hero Blood Drive on March 15 from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Brickhouse Community Center.

"We want everyone to participate by providing a lifesaving donation and enjoy the super hero theme by dressing up as their favorite super hero," Kimble said. "We will have contests and prizes to give out during the event."

The Super Hero Blood Drive will be serviced by the Armed Services Blood Program, the official blood collection, manufacturing and transfusion program for the U.S. military.

"We have a great relationship with our partners at the ASBP," Kimble said. "They are gracious enough to come to our base to provide the blood services for our community. The donations that they obtain help service members and family members across Europe and downrange."

Donating blood is just one of many ways Spangdahlem community members can support Red Cross Month. Check the calendar below for more information and event details.
