Former NASA Astronaut visits USAFE for Extreme Summer

 In honor of the Air Force's 60th Birthday celebrations throughout the summer, and the annual USAFE Extreme Summer program, former astronaut Lt Col William G. Gregory (Ret) will visit a variety of USAFE bases in July. 

The following bases will host Gregory and will offer chances for community members to see his presentation about space shuttle travel, ask questions and obtain autographs.

Gregory served as the STS-67 pilot on the seven-person astronomical research mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Launching from the Kennedy Space Center on March 2, 1995, and landing at Edwards AFB on March 18, 1995, the crew established a new mission duration record of 16 days, 15 hours, 8 minutes and 46 seconds, while completing 262 orbits and traveling nearly seven million miles. 

Gregory earned a B.S. in engineering sciences from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1979, an M.S. in engineering mechanics from Columbia University in 1980, and an M.S. in management from Troy State University in 1984. From 1981 to 1986, he served as a fighter pilot and an instructor pilot flying the F-111 at RAF Lakenheath, U.K., and Cannon AFB, New Mexico. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School in 1987, he served at Edwards AFB as a test pilot flying the F-4, A-7D, and all five models of the F-15 Eagle. 

Selected by NASA in January 1990, Gregory became an astronaut in July 1991. After becoming an astronaut in 1991, he served as the astronaut office representative for Shuttle Landing/Rollout and T-38 flying safety and was a member of the Astronaut Support Crew supervising preparation of the Shuttle for launch. 

Gregory retired from the Air Force and left NASA in the summer of 1999. He currently serves as Manager of Business Development, Honeywell, Phoenix, Arizona.
