Tips to save energy with lighting Published Oct. 29, 2007 By 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Conserve not only money, but also natural resources with the following Green Tips: General awareness - Create an awareness in children for the need of energy conservation. - Be aware of the need for energy conservation at home, the workplace, hotels, etc. Lighting: - Turn-off lights when they are not being used; one 100-watt incandescent light left on for 24-hours a day costs more than $150 per year. - Use low-energy light bulbs whenever possible since they use less than one quarter of the electricity used by ordinary light bulbs and can last 15 times longer. - Use low-wattage bulbs in night-lights. - Use natural lighting whenever possible; open blinds, drapes and shades. - Use fluorescent lights if possible; they use less energy and have a longer life cycle. - Keep lamps and light fixtures clean. - In storage areas and corridors, replace existing lighting with smaller wattage or higher-efficiency lights.
