New procedures for obtaining international license Published Jan. 11, 2008 By Master Sgt. Sean D. Smith 52nd Security Forces Squadron SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE -- When driving outside German borders there is a legal requirement to have a valid international license. U.S. personnel traveling in countries bordering Germany, driving on their USAREUR license have been stopped by police and fined for driving without a license. As a result U.S. personnel who wish to drive in neighboring countries are advised to obtain an international license. Previously, personnel had to complete the international license application which they took to Driver's Licensing and Testing with their USAREUR license to have it authenticated. Personnel were then required to obtain a passport size photo to take to the Bitburg Courthouse where they would be issued their international license for 15 euro. This could be a timely process and intimidating for personnel unfamiliar with the local language. In an effort to simplify the process, save time and provide a value added service the Driver's Licensing and Testing personnel now process international driver's license applications. Just bring a valid USAREUR license, passport size photo, 15 euro and completed application. Members of the office will then drop off and pick up international licenses from the Bitburg Courthouse, which will take approximately one to two weeks. For more information, call 452-6620.
