Bitburg Post Office draws down

  • Published
After serving Bitburg Air Base and the surrounding community for 36 years, the Bitburg Post Office will begin to reduce its hours to two days a week and eventually close in 2010.

The 2010 closure coincides with the planned closure of most of the military housing on Bitburg. As a step towards this closure, and in an attempt to offset the manning cuts of postal personnel, the Bitburg Post Office is reducing services to the following hours effective May 1, 2008:

- Open Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Finance - 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Parcel Pick-Up - 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

By scaling back services at the Bitburg Post Office, which services about 300 mailboxes, the staff is able to preserve the extended hours of operation on Spangdahlem, where the staff maintains about 4,200 boxes.

In light of the reduced hours, some patrons may want to switch their mailboxes from Bitburg to Spangdahlem. This is possible and the staff highly encourages it. There are several advantages to using the Spangdahlem Post Office, to include full postal services, extended customer service hours including Saturdays, and e-mail notification of packages awaiting pick-up. To switch over to the Spangdahlem Post Office, go to the customer service window at Spangdahlem.
