Garland Shawn Stanley Unit: 470th Air Base Squadron Duty title: Accounting Technician Hometown: Buna, Texas Years in service: 13 years Why I joined: I wanted to travel, see and experience the world. The military had always been a rite of passage in my family. Family: My parents, Talmadge and Martha Stanley; sisters: Tammy and Vashti; nephews: Logon, Taylor, Triston, Lane and Hollis; and a niece who is due in three months Hobbies: Musical instruments -- if it has strings, I can play it. I'm not claiming necessarily well, but I can play it. Favorite aspect of job: I enjoy seeing the money I've handled make others lives easier. One of the most stressful things in the world is money. I won't wish problems for anyone, but I do feel accomplished when someone has a problem that I'm able to turn around for them. It gives me that sense of feeling as if I make a difference. Most memorable Air Force experience: My year in SotoCano, Honduras. Every day felt like an episode of M*A*S*H* without the shelling. I lived in a wooden hootch with mesh wire windows. All the locals spoke adifferent language, of which we learned bits and pieces. Everyone was as sarcastically funny as they could be, and we were all friends. I loved it. How do you make responsible choices: I'll check the regulations, my personal morals and conscience, confer with leadership if needed, then I will run a worst and best case scenario in my head if there is still more than one choice which can be made.
