Be a good neighbor: Access road officially opens Published March 25, 2011 SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Although Sabers have been using the access road leading to the front gate here for months, the ribbon was officially cut on it March 18. The access road runs parallel to the L-46 and cost the German Bundeswehr 1.7 million Euros to build. The Bundeswehr is responsible for providing infrastructure around military bases to guarantee easy access. The road took a year to construct and was designed to alleviate traffic jams at the traffic circle outside Spangdahlem Air Base's main gate. The access road's purpose is to free the traffic circle for traffic coming from the Autobahn traveling toward local communities like Spangdahlem, Beilingen or Herforst. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by 52nd Fighter Wing leadership, village mayors, Rheinland-Pfalz state officials, civic leaders, and Bundeswehr and German construction office representatives.
