On May 26, 2011, Airman Jonathon Aulette, 52nd Security Forces Squadron, pled guilty to multiple drug charges at a Special Court-Martial. The charges included attempted cocaine possession, spice use and distribution, and marijuana and hashish possession.

Airman Aulette also pleaded guilty to charges of assault, communicating a threat and disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to six months in jail, forfeiture of $800 pay every month for six months and reduction to E-1.

Airman Aulette admitted to smoking Spice more times than he could remember between July 2010 and February 2011, including while armed and on post. He also admitted to travelling to the Netherlands to purchase cocaine, marijuana and hashish. Airman Aulette also made unlawful threats to a fellow Airman while on duty, assaulting him and throwing furniture around at their place of duty.

During sentencing, the U.S. government presented evidence of Airman Aulette's past disciplinary problems, including a DUI from earlier this year. Prosecutors also demonstrated the mission impact caused by Airman Aulette's inability to perform his duties or even carry a weapon at a time when his unit was supporting Operation Odyssey Dawn and he was tasked to deploy.

Witnesses testified that Airman Aulette was the area supervisor responsible for protecting the flight line and all of Spangdahlem Air Base's F-16 Fighting Falcons when he smoked spice on duty. His defense counsel argued in mitigation that Airman Aulette was under a lot of stress when he made the bad decisions, and the judge should go easy on him.

Airman Aulette faced a maximum sentence of one year in confinement, forfeiture of two-thirds pay per month for a year and reduction to E-1.

Airmen who have used drugs, including Spice, are subject to administrative discharge under AFI 36-3208.
