Spangdahlem passenger terminal provides alternative flight options Published July 11, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Dillon Davis 52 FW/PA SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Saving money on flights just got simpler by using Space Available with Air Mobility Command. With two terminals in Germany -- one here and one at Ramstein Air Base -- travelers have many opportunities for air transit. Active-duty military, family members and retirees can all participate in Space Available flights by following set guidelines to sign up for the program. Before signing up, active-duty military must be on approved leave status with their leave paperwork and family members traveling alone must have a commander-approval letter. Once ready to travel, there are multiple ways of signing up for Space Available to include in-person or by e-mail. Once signed up, the member is placed on a flight waiting roster according to classification and priority. After signing up for the program, members must ensure they are ready to travel on the next available flight or they may be skipped. Items necessary to fly Space Available include leave form, ID and passport, if flying internationally. Next, the member should arrive at the terminal three hours before the flight departure time to check in with the passenger service center. An important note to remember is to constantly check for changes in flight arrivals, departures and destination changes. Once checked in at the passenger service center, a flight roll-call will inform travelers if they have a seat on the aircraft and to proceed to flight check in. Following flight check, they will have to go through a flight-security screening and then proceed to the aircraft boarding zone. Prices for flights vary depending on the type of aircraft and destination. Flights on commercial aircraft cost $26.10 from overseas to the states and $14.10 from the states to overseas. Flights on military aircraft have no charge. Although there are no charges for checked bags, there are restrictions to the amount of luggage travelers may bring. Luggage limitations allow two checked bags up to 70 pounds each, and one carry-on bag or item per person. Once on the flight, meals are available for $4.25 and are payable by cash, credit, money order, check or traveler's check.
