Name:
Staff Sgt. Sarah Durbin

Unit: 52nd Dental Squadron

Duty title: Dental assistant

Hometown:
Friendswood, Texas

Years in Service: Five years and 10 months

Why joined:
I joined the U.S. Air Force to serve the greatest country in the world. After Sept. 11, 2001, my personal goal was to somehow make a difference. Being an Airman in the Air Force has helped me achieve that goal. Educational benefits as well as traveling have been added benefits, which I have been able to fully take advantage of.

Family: Duke, my 5-year-old boxer/pit-bull mix

Hobbies: I enjoy traveling, snowboarding, playing volleyball and doing anything outdoors.

Favorite aspect of job: My favorite aspect of my job is the personal encounters I have with patients. I get to interact with new people from all over the world every day. There are so many great stories out there, and I'm honored to hear them daily.

Most memorable Air Force experience: My most memorable Air Force experience was the day I stepped off a cargo plane at Balad Air Base, Iraq. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew I was making a difference by just being there. Unimaginable things were happening all around me, and I had only my fellow Airmen to lean on. In those five short months, I learned who I was and created some life-long friendships.

How do you make responsible choices: Everyone makes mistakes, but learning from those mistakes is what counts. I am able to make responsible choices by thinking clearly through the consequences of my actions.
