SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- The 52nd Communications Squadron will soon complete an upgrade from Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 to Microsoft Sharepoint 2013 to modernize non-classified internet protocol router networks, commonly known as NIPR.
The upgrade will offer SharePoint user’s capabilities like Business Intelligence, Document Workflow and Drag-and-Drop to ease document transfers from user to user.
“Across the Air Force, the SharePoint migration is taking place,” said Airman 1st Class George Skon, 52nd CS enterprise information management apprentice. “To put it simply, a SharePoint migration is the transferal of any and all data across internal Spangdahlem Air Base-specific share sites.”
Skon added how upgrading to SharePoint 2013 is necessary not only for security but for user concerns.
According to Staff Sgt. Katrina Taylor, 52nd CS enterprise information management supervisor, the migration will improve capabilities within the SharePoint network environment and increase Spangdahlem’s network security posture as well as helping the base’s SharePoint user experience.
“There’s no need for users to backup information,” Taylor said. “U.S. Air Forces Europe tasked each base to convert all 2007 templates to the 2010 version. Therefore, SharePoint 2010 templates will convert over to the SharePoint 2013 version. USAFE’s SharePoint servers back up data content every week.”
During the transition, users will still be able to access SharePoint 2010 site, but as read-only. Documents will be fully accessible once the transition is complete.
